Senator  Iyiola  omisore
The Election Petitions Tribunal hearing matters arising from August 9 governorship election in Osun State on Tuesday admitted the ballot papers used in the conduct of the election.
The tribunal, headed by Justice Elizabeth Ikpejime, admitted the documents brought in sacks as evidence tendered by the petitioner, Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party. However, he reserved ruling on their admissibility until the judgment stage.
The tribunal had subpoenaed the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state to produce original ballot papers used in the 17 local government areas under dispute.
The materials were brought in 10 pick-up vans on Monday and the lead counsel for the petitioner, Dr. Alex Izinyon ( SAN), called the United States-based forensic data analysis expert, Mr. Pius Bakare, who tendered the documents.

Jonathan's visit to Oau causes pandemonium in the school

No fewer than six students were injured during a clash among some students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Sunday evening.
While some of the eyewitnesses described the fight as a power tussle between students who were loyal to the President of the Student Union, Ibikunle Isaac, and those of the Vice-President, Oladejo Olufunmi, others described it as a cult attack.
They all, however, agreed that the clash was an aftermath of President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit to the institution.
It was learnt that the Education Rights Campaign members had just concluded a meeting at the Students’ Union Building when the fight broke out.
Among those involved in the fight were some union executive members, suspended students of the university, members of the Security Committee of the SU and ERC members.
Some of the students, who suffered varying degrees of injuries, were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
One of them, Tedy, was allegedly stabbed with a pointed object suspected to be a screw driver, while another student, David, was dealt a matchete cut on his head.

Vincent Enyeama loses BBC African Footballer of the year award to Yacine Brahimi

Algeria’s Yacine Brahimi has been voted the BBC African Footballer of the Year 2014 ahead of Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama.
The 24-year-old midfielder becomes the first Algerian to win the award, which is decided by football fans.
Brahimi told BBC Sport, “It’s a big honour for me to receive this wonderful trophy. I owe it to my country, Algeria, and to all the people who voted for me.
“It’s also a trophy for the whole of Africa, because it rewards an African player. So I am really very happy.”
After a record number of votes were submitted from fans in 207 FIFA-registered countries, Brahimi came out on top ahead of Nigerian Vincent Enyeama, Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ivorian pair, Gervinho and Yaya Toure. Brahimi and Enyeama were shortlisted on Monday before the final selection was made.
And he is thrilled to have been acclaimed as the best player on the continent for the past year.
“This trophy is going to give me more strength, more desire to work, to get better, to learn so that I can keep having great performances,” Brahimi added.
During 2014, Brahimi has shone for both club and country.
He starred for Algeria at the World Cup in Brazil, helping them reach the last-16 for the first time.
Domestically, Brahimi started the year at Spanish club, Granada, where his strong performances led to him being named best African player in the country last season – and earned him a move to Portuguese giants Porto.

STEPHEN KESHI FUTURE UNCERTAIN

STEPHEN KESHI

Contrary to earlier reports, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has informed that no deal has been agreed with out-of-contract Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi.
There have been reports suggesting that the football federation has offered Keshi an improved contract reportedly worth N84 million per annum.
According to the reports, Keshi would be handed a new contract for a year starting from January 2015 and would run till December of the same year.
However, while speaking on a monitored sports programme on Radio in Lagos, NFF president Amaju Pinnick played down the reports of a new improved contract has been offered to Keshi

Prof Wole Soyinka blasts GEJ, calls him the Nebuchadnezzar of Nigeria

Nobel Laureate, Prof  Wole Soyinka, says President Goodluck Jonathan is worse than neo-Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, describing Jonathan as a President that embraces impunity.
Soyinka at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday blamed Jonathan for the fracas at the National Assembly in which lawmakers resorted to scaling the gate of the Assembly complex in order to gain access to their chambers after being prevented by the police.
He said although Jonathan was democratically elected, his actions had proved that he was more of a dictator.
He said for instance, the split in Nigeria Governors’ Forum last year in which 16 governors had the final say over 19 other governors showed that the President was willing to do anything to achieve his political goals.
Soyinka said the barring of governors by policemen from entering Ekiti State to campaign for former Governor Kayode Fayemi in June showed that Jonathan was not only a dictator but was encouraging impunity by encouraging security agents to disrespect constituted authority.

WHO declares Spain Ebola free

Spain is officially clear of Ebola, the World Health Organization declared Tuesday, after no new cases were reported since a nurse’s assistant who contracted the virus there tested negative for it.
Since then, 42 days have passed — double the maximum known incubation period for the virus — without another case, allowing Spain to be declared free of Ebola.
Spanish authorities had been monitoring 87 people who came into contact with healthcare worker Teresa Romero Ramos, 15 of whom were considered high-risk and were quarantined at a Madrid hospital, WHO said.
Another 145 hospital employees who helped care for Romero during her month-long stay at the Carlos III Hospital were also monitored.
The WHO statement said it “commends Spain for the measures put in place to identify potential cases and prevent further transmission of the Ebola virus.”
Romero contracted the illness while helping to care for an infected missionary who had been brought back from West Africa. He died of the disease.

Lionel Messi v Cristiano Ronaldo: Who is the best in the world?

LIONEL MESSI                         -                         CHRISTIANO RONALDO

Ahead of the first El Clasico of the season on Saturday - live on Sky Sports 5 at 5pm - Sky Sports News HQ ran a Twitter poll to decide who is the best player in the world: Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? It was a discussion that involved Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker, who was fighting Ronaldo's corner, and former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour, who was making a case for Messi.

Cristiano Ronaldo makes $1billion Real Madrid release clause seem justifiable

Cristiano Ronaldo showed again against Liverpool he is doing what all who saw last season's remarkable feats assumed was inconceivable: he's getting better

Man of the moment: Cristiano Ronaldo (left) dismantled Liverpool            STEVEN GERRARD (RIGHT)
Look closer at the pictures of Cristiano Ronaldo's goal celebration at Anfield and you glimpse a quite astonishing sight. No, not his graceful knee-slide, choreographed perfectly for the lenses around the corner flag, but the expressions on the faces of the Liverpool fans around him.
All of them, to a man, conveying a stunned blankness, with nary a flicker of opprobrium. Only a player on the path to historic greatness can be granted such uniformity of reverence.
Perhaps Jorge Mendes, Ronaldo's agent, was not exaggerating last week when he divulged that the Portuguese phenomenon's release clause at Real Madrid commanded a €1 billion (£790 million) fee, and that the world would not witness a player of his ilk for another 500 years. For Ronaldo is doing what all who savoured last season's feats - 17 goals in the Champions League, and a jaw-dropping 51 from 47 in total - had assumed was inconceivable: he is getting better.
Already Raúl must prepare to cede distinction as the Champions League's top scorer, with 71 goals, to his irrepressible pursuer. Ronaldo already has 10 from this campaign alone, and we are only two-thirds through the group phase.
His 70 overall could quite plausibly become 80 should Real build, as he hopes, upon the catharsis of last season's La Décima with La Undécima, an 11th European Cup, in the final in Berlin next May.

EVERTON FANS CLASH WITH POLICE IN LILLE

Everton fans clashed with police in Lille on Thursday ahead of the club’s Europa League Group H game with the French first division side.
Dozens of anti-riot police used teargas and warning shots to disperse around 200 English fans who had gathered at the Grand Place in the city centre.
According to reports the trouble started after plain-clothed British officers who had travelled to Lille, tried to arrest an Everton fan they had recognised.
During a lively 10-minute clash a number of shop windows were broken while one British national was arrested.
Reports suggest there were no injuries on Thursday but some Everton fans were injured the night before after being attacked by some 50 Lille supporters.

He wanted to reduce my influence - Wike

Chief Nyesom Wike
THE immediate-past Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, on Thursday alleged that the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, made him a minister in order to whittle down his influence in the state.
Wike, who is seeking to become the next governor of the state, explained that becoming a minister was not aimed at promoting himself, adding that the target was to make him less influential and lose his base politically.
He recalled that he had wanted to vie for the senate position to represent Rivers East in 2011, but was barred from doing so, adding that the governor never told him that he (Amaechi) was nominating him (Wike) for the position of a minister.
Wike, who spoke in an African Independent Television interview monitored by our correspondent on Thursday, stated that he was at a time no longer interested in working in a hostile environment when the governor hinted him of his intention to scrap the office of the chief of staff.
“Amaechi was told that if he wanted to have a successor, without anybody disturbing him, there was the need to push me away from Rivers State, to go and be a minister, for my influence in the state to be reduced. It was not a promotion for me, rather it was a strategy to make me less influential and to lose base.
“The governor never discussed with me that he was nominating me for a ministerial appointment. Ten persons were nominated to be minister from Rivers State. I was the second person on the list. Atedo Peterside was the first person on the list. Tonye Cole was the third person.
“Amaechi said he was going to scrap the office of Chief of Staff and I said I was no longer going to occupy it again. I was the Director-General of his campaign organisation in 2011 and having seen what had happened, it would no longer be conducive for me to work in an environment of hostility,” he said.
On his governorship ambition, Wike explained that his initial aspiration was not to succeed Amaechi and added that he had to consult stakeholders in the state before he decided to run.
Wike attributed the enmity between him and Amaechi to unnecessary suspicion, maintaining that he never left his constituency after becoming a minister.
“Succeeding Amaechi was certainly not my ambition. As events unfolded and time went by, a lot of things happened and I had to consult widely on whether to run or not. It is not as if I had the ambition all along to succeed Governor Amaechi,” he said.

BRITISH MP ENJOINS NIGERIAN LAWMAKERS TO FEAR GOD

A member of the British Parliament, Lord Paul Boateng, on Thursday, advised his Nigerian counterparts to be guided by the fear of God while discharging their constitutional responsibilities.
Boateng, a Peer in the British House of Lords, said this in Abuja while delivering a keynote address at this year’s edition of the National Prayer Breakfast, organised by the National Assembly.
The British parliamentarian, who spoke on the topic, “A Nation at crossroads: The need for godly leadership”, specifically counselled his counterparts in the Nigerian legislature to avoid greed, corruption and selfishness as much as possible.
He advised them to see their election into the parliament as a call to serve their constituents, and not an opportunity to amass wealth for themselves.
He also urged them to exhibit confidence by being committed to the needs, yearnings and aspirations of their constituency and their country.
He said, “The task of lawmaking is a calling that must be prosecuted only through the leading of God and His Holy Spirit.

“Anyone who would represent his or her people in whatever capacity effectively must possess the character of God so that they would be able to competently address the plights of all vulnerable groups with confidence.”
He maintained that the crises, destructive epidemics and the worrisome rate of corruption ravaging African countries, could only be tackled if all leaders and their followers played their roles well in the polity.
Boateng said, “We can be said to be real agents of transformation if as leaders we equip ourselves with the right attitudes to deliver justice with the fear of God.
“A parliamentarian who is above board would have all the necessary qualifications to provide necessary leadership skills and competence required to address the problems confronting their constituents.”
Chairman of the programme, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, said that in the lawmakers’ determination to be closer to God, members of the payer group had concluded plans to build a worship centre within the National Assembly complex.
He also said all arrangements had been put in place to constitute the National Prayer Group Choir.
The event was attended by Senate President, David Mark; his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu; Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; and other lawmakers from both chambers of the National Assembly.

MAN ABANDONS HIS CHILDREN IN BOARDING SCHOOL FOR 8 YEARS

picture of the children
According to our source, when they visited Solid Model College, the children recounted their ordeal, noting that the absence of their parents was affecting their studies. Seun Adepegba, 14,Seyi, 10 and Titilola, 13, had been severed from parental love and care since
infanthood. After waiting for eight years, they seemed to have relinquished all hopes of reuniting with their parents.
It was learnt that their tale of sorrow began in 2007 when their father, Mr Segun Adepegba, who had been separated from their mother, enrolled them in the boarding school because he could not afford to take care of them.
According to the proprietor of the school, Mr Samuel Ayegbusi, Adepegba came to enroll them in his school on September 24, 2007 with a promise to always check on them.
He said:
“Mr. Adepegba told me his wife had just left him and that he could not afford to take care of them, being a jobless man. The children were very little. Seyi was two, while Titilola was five.
Mr Adepegba had pleaded with me to accept them in the boarding school. Mr Adepegba’s sister promised to bear the cost of their upkeep. They paid an initial N150, 000 for the three children for the first term.”
But according to the proprietor, Adepegba never kept his promise. He said after the first term, the school expected him to come and take his children home for holiday but he never showed up until four years later. He said the school had expended over N7m on the upkeep of the children since 2007.
The proprietor said efforts to reach the parents’ families had proved abortive, adding that calls to Adepegba’s phones were not always answered.
He said:
“Whenever we called him and he realised who was talking on the phone, he would switch off his phones and for the next two weeks, the numbers would not be available. When the school contacted their father’s sisters, we were told that they had travelled out of the country.
When we called one of them, we were told that they had sent money to Mr Adepegba to defray the children’s school fees and upkeep. But Mr. Adepegba has never come here to make any payment since the initial deposit he made in 2007.”
According to the proprietor, taking care of the children had further become cumbersome for him as one of them, Titilayo, had started misbehaving. He recounted how Titilayo ran away from the hostel twice without informing the school authority on the excuse that she was going to look for her father.
Ever since she was found, the proprietor said the school had had to keep her in a room, under tight surveillance, because she had vowed to run away to find her father.
He said:
“The school is not even bothered by the cost of their upkeep. But anytime the school closed for holiday and parents come around to take their children home, Titilayo would fall into a sober mood and twice, she had run away from the hostel without informing anyone. It was a resident who stopped her and brought her back to the school. Some of the teachers, who spoke with our source's during the visit, said the absence of the children’s parents was seriously affecting their studies. They said the appearance of their parents would boost their academic performance.
While recounting their days with their father, the children said he celebrated birthdays with them. They said they had never met their mother.
Titilayo said:
“We do not know who our mother is. We grew up in Yaba, Lagos and all we remember is that there was a woman that washed our clothes and took care of us until we came here. We knew she was not our mother.”
Seyi, the youngest of the trio, however, was an exception as she kept a cheerful look during the visit. Seyi, who told the correspondent her dream was to become a medical doctor said:
“Although I have a faint memory of my father, I will like to see him. If he comes today, I will ask him why he left us for so long.” Seun added:
“I don’t care how long he has left us. I just want to see him. I really need to see him.”
our source says when they called Adepegba on Thursday, his phones were switched off.

Lukaku doesn't need rest, insists Roberto Martinez

Lukaku doesn't need rest, insists Roberto Martinez
The Everton centre forward has not been on top form since completing a €35 million permanent move from Chelsea this summer but his manager argues that he needs to keep playing.

FOLLOW ME ON @Horlatboy

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has no intention of resting Romelu Lukaku as the striker searches for top form and fitness.
The Belgium international enjoyed a productive season on loan at Goodison Park from Chelsea in 2013-14, scoring 15 Premier League goals in 33 appearances as Everton finished fifth before reaching the World Cup quarter-finals in Brazil.
In July, Everton acquired the forward on a permanent basis for a club-record fee of €35 million but the 21-year-old has made a slow start to the new campaign with two goals in 10 appearances in all competitions so far.

HIT OR MISS? LUKAKU TO EVERTON
4/1 Romelu Lukaku is 4/1 with Bet365 to score the first goal in an Everton win over Aston Villa
In a press conference on Thursday, Martinez conceded that Lukaku is taking time to recover from the World Cup but argues that resting him would not be the ideal solution.
"Romelu is still finding his best moment of form and any player that comes back from the World Cup takes a bit of a transitional period," he remarked.
"I think Rom has done incredible to make himself available for the games we had. He's played a lot of games and probably his desire to help the team has stopped him from concentrating on being fully fit.
"Over the next few weeks we'll try to give him that physical element that he needs. When you come back from the World Cup you need to recover from the previous season.
"I think now Rom needs to play and get his match fitness and he's too important for us. We can't afford to give him a resting period and I don't think that would help him.
"I think now he's got a good level of fitness through the games he's played so it's a responsibility we've got at the club that we get him fully fit so he can enjoy his football.
"What I love about Rom is his attitude. He wants to be on the pitch, he wants to help the team and he'll accept any moments of form so that he can get through it"
